Mas Alta
Priorat at its finest expression.
Founded in 1999 by the Belgian Lambrecht and Vanhoutte families, with the technical guidance of renowned French winemaker Michel Tardieu, Mas Alta has become a benchmark in the modern Priorat landscape.
The Vineyards
The winery is based in La Vilella Alta (Priorat), a small and secluded village at the foot of the Montsant mountains. The climate is dry, with an annual rainfall of roughly 300 mm, hot summers and minimal influence from the marine Garbinada. Here, they primarily cultivate old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, planted between 300 and 550 meters of altitude, on slopes with diverse exposures and an outstanding variety of soils, with decomposed slate —locally known as llicorella— as the defining feature. Since 2009, all vineyards have been certified organic.
Winemaking Philosophy
Winemaking at Mas Alta focuses on achieving balance while preserving the expression of each plot. Fermentations are conducted with gentle extraction and controlled intervention, honouring Garnacha’s natural finesse and Cariñena’s structural backbone.
Ageing takes place in a range of vessels —barrels, foudres and concrete tanks— to encourage complexity without overwhelming the wines. The reds typically mature for 12–16 months in barrel, with varying proportions of new oak, followed by an additional 3–12 months in foudre or concrete to refine texture and tension.
The resulting wines are deep and elegant, capturing Priorat’s warmth while maintaining balance and a distinct mineral signature.
