Produced since the 17th century, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux is the estate's historic second wine and the oldest in the Médoc; it has carried this name since the 1906 vintage. It comes from the estate's emblematic plots and is made with the same rigour as the Grand Vin. The 2012 vintage is a very powerful wine — close to the historic tannic concentration levels of 2011 — yet very balanced, fine and racy: already enjoyable, though it will reward a few more years of patience.

Description

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux has been made since the 17th century and is Château Margaux's historic second wine, the oldest in the Médoc. It comes from the estate's emblematic plots and is made with the same know-how as the Grand Vin: the same vines — of comparable age to those of the Grand Vin — the same team, and the same rigour, in both vineyard and cellar. This discipline allows Pavillon Rouge to reach a concentration and tannin quality comparable to the Grand Vin today, while offering a more approachable expression of the Château Margaux style.

The blend, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (around 75-80%), is completed with 15-20% Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that add roundness, depth and aromatic complexity. Ageing lasts around twenty months, close to 60% in new French oak barrels, giving the wine a silky texture, a fine structure and well-integrated oak.

For the 2012 vintage, according to the estate's own vinification report, barely 30% of the harvest went into Pavillon Rouge, continuing the tightened selection effort under way since 2011. Certain Merlot plots allowed 33% of that variety into the blend — its highest share in recent years — while Petit Verdot was limited to 3% after the summer drought. The Cabernets — 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc — form the backbone of the wine.

«À peine 30% de la récolte dans le Pavillon Rouge : l'effort de sélection renforcé depuis 2011 se poursuit et contribue à rapprocher, au moins en style, le Pavillon Rouge du premier vin. Certaines parcelles de merlot commencent enfin à s'améliorer, pas encore assez pour rentrer dans le premier vin, mais leur qualité a permis cette année d'en introduire 33% dans l'assemblage. La sélection parcellaire de plus en plus fine que nous pratiquons, ainsi bien sûr que les conditions du millésime, expliquent en grande partie cette bonne nouvelle. Ce n'est pas le cas des petits verdots, dont les jeunes parcelles qui avaient si bien réussi en 2011 ont mal résisté à la sécheresse estivale ; il n'y en a qu'à peine 3%. Les cabernets - 63% de cabernet sauvignon, 1% de cabernet franc - constituent bien sûr la trame du vin. Le Pavillon Rouge 2012 est un vin très puissant - on retrouve presque les niveaux historiques de concentration tannique du 2011 - mais très équilibré, fin et racé. S'il n'atteint pas le niveau de qualité du 2010 il n'en est probablement pas loin. Il est déjà très agréable mais gagnera à être encore attendu quelques années.»

Returns Policy

Return Window: In accordance with consumer regulations, customers have the right to withdraw from the purchase within 14 calendar days from receipt of the order, provided that the bottles are in their original, unopened packaging. To exercise this right, customers must notify us in writing via contact form, stating the order number and the products to be returned. Return shipping costs will be borne by the customer, except in the case of defective products or shipping errors.
Withdrawal Exceptions: Returns will not be accepted for opened or tampered bottles, or for personalised products.
Damaged or Incorrect Products: If you receive a damaged product or one different from the item ordered, you must notify us within 24 hours of receipt, attaching photographs of the packaging and the affected product. Vin Finesse will arrange for a replacement or a refund, including any associated shipping.

UNCORK THE EXTRAORDINARY

Attractive sweet and smoky character to the raspberry fruits. This is generous, with subtle caramel and smoked cedar, a delicious Pavillon that is approachable and open, ready to drink but absolutely no rush, it will stay at this level for at least another decade. 30% of overall production.

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot. Very fragrant indeed. Lift and restraint. Not TOO sweet compared with some other Médocs in 2012. Lovely balance. Very clean and healthy. Modestly scaled. Very precise and neat. Very discreet - beautiful really is an apt word for this.

With the introduction of a third wine at Château Margaux, what's included in the second
wine has arguably gone up a notch in quality. This is certainly a very polished Margaux,
with attractive plum and green pepper flavours, silky tannins, fresh acidity and a supple,
chocolatey finish.
