Second wine of Château Cos d'Estournel, Deuxième Grand Cru Classé (1855). Since its creation in 1994, Les Pagodes de Cos has always come from the same clearly defined terroir, with vines averaging forty years of age. In 2019, a great Bordeaux vintage, it combines density and elegance: black fruit, violet, bergamot and black tea, velvety tannins and a long, saline finish. Already in its drinking window, with the potential to age well into the 2040s.

Description

Château Cos d'Estournel is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification. Les Pagodes de Cos, created in 1994, is its second wine — though the estate itself calls it its "other Grand Vin". Far from a selection of declassified lots, it is a wine with its own identity, always sourced from the same clearly defined terroir, with vines averaging forty years of age.

The 2019 vintage is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure and tension, Merlot flesh and breadth, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot add aromatic freshness and colour.

In the estate's words, the attack is unctuous, with the buttery, spicy notes characteristic of Pagodes de Cos, leading into an elegant interplay of black fruit, violet, bergamot and black tea. Velvety tannins set up a very long finish, lifted by saline notes. A wine that is at once dense and elegant, with the precision and balance critics singled out in this vintage.
