Description

Guímaro is one of the names that have shaped the identity of Ribeira Sacra. The Rodríguez family has worked the dizzying terraces above the River Sil for generations and has been bottling its own wine since 1991. In 2001, with the support of Raúl Pérez, Pedro Rodríguez took over the reins. Guímaro — Galician for "rebel" — now farms ten hectares of estate vineyards in the Amandi subzone, plus a further sixteen under contract.

The house philosophy is to respect each vineyard as it was planted: every plot is bottled with the mix of varieties it actually contains. Pedro sees ancestral wisdom in these field blends, bringing complexity and a distinctive personality to the wines. The result is a range of eight wines, from the regional bottlings to the village wine Camiño Real and the single-vineyard reds — Meixemán, A Ponte, Pombeiras and Capeliños — sourced from very old vines on granite and slate terraces high above the river.

Guímaro Tinto is the gateway to that vision. Mencía, around 85% of the blend, is joined by Merenzao, Brancellao, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón from 30- to 40-year-old vines on granite and sandy soils across the appellation. The wine is fermented and aged for four to eight months in stainless steel, with no oak, to preserve purity of fruit and a clear sense of place.

The 2024 vintage has produced a pale, perfumed red with dried flowers and fresh fruit on the nose. The palate is light to medium-bodied, fresh and evenly balanced, with bright fruit, barely perceptible tannins and a clean, lingering finish.

UNCORK THE EXTRAORDINARY

"This red must be the finest I’ve ever tasted in Guímaro: the wine has an expressive nose of fresh fruit and a vibrant palate, with very fine tannins, pure flavours and a magnificent finish."

"This has delicate aromas of dried flowers and a nervy, lifted character. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and evenly balanced, with light, bright fruit and a pleasant, fluid texture. Straightforward and approachable, this comes from a range of subregions and is fermented and aged in tank. Drink now."
