Description

Château Labégorce stands along the celebrated route des Châteaux in Margaux, bordering Châteaux Margaux and Lascombes. The existence of "the lands of the noble house of La Bégorce" is documented as far back as 1332, and Édouard Féret's 1868 edition describes the estate as "one of the most beautiful and best situated" in the commune. The current neoclassical château dates from 1821.

Like many of the great Médoc estates, the original property was broken up during the French Revolution into three separate estates: Château Labégorce, the small L'Abbé Gorsse de Gorsse and what later became known as Château Labégorce-Zédé.

The Perrodo family acquired Labégorce in 1989 and has since restored its architectural grandeur alongside a renewed winemaking ambition. Hubert Perrodo also set out to reunite the historic vineyard: he bought the château and part of the land of L'Abbé Gorsse de Gorsse in 2002 — the vines went to Château Margaux — and, in 2005, Labégorce-Zédé, bringing the vineyard divided two centuries earlier back under single ownership. Perrodo died in 2006, shortly after completing the reunification; 2008 was the last vintage released under the independent Labégorce-Zédé label, its name now living on in the estate's second wine, Zédé de Labégorce.

The property is today run by Hubert's daughter, Nathalie Perrodo, who also oversees the family's other Margaux estates: Château Marquis d'Alesme — a Third Growth, acquired in 2006 — and Château La Tour de Mons. Marjolaine Maurice de Coninck serves as managing director of the Perrodo estates.

The roughly 70-hectare vineyard, set within a 250-hectare estate, lies on the plateau just north of the village of Margaux, bordering Château Lascombes and northwest of Château Margaux itself. Soils combine gravel and sand (70% sandy-gravel) with more silt-rich plots (30% sandy-silt). Vinification takes place in cement and stainless-steel vats, with malolactic fermentation in tank; the wine is aged for 12 to 14 months, with 40-50% new French oak.

Returns Policy

Return Window: In accordance with consumer regulations, customers have the right to withdraw from the purchase within 14 calendar days from receipt of the order, provided that the bottles are in their original, unopened packaging. To exercise this right, customers must notify us in writing via contact form, stating the order number and the products to be returned. Return shipping costs will be borne by the customer, except in the case of defective products or shipping errors.
Withdrawal Exceptions: Returns will not be accepted for opened or tampered bottles, or for personalised products.
Damaged or Incorrect Products: If you receive a damaged product or one different from the item ordered, you must notify us within 24 hours of receipt, attaching photographs of the packaging and the affected product. Vin Finesse will arrange for a replacement or a refund, including any associated shipping.

UNCORK THE EXTRAORDINARY

Clear depth to the cassis fruits, studded with fennel, anis, cut herbs, raspberry leaf and smoked earth, delivering complexity and pleasure. A brilliant wine, and a great value pick. 33% new oak. Harvest September 16 to October 1, technical director Marjolaine de Coninck.

Beautiful, perfumed blackcurrants on the nose, smells lovely. Juicy and supple, this has a nice roundness and a fleshy texture in the glass while still being quite focused and streamlined. This has a sleekness to the tannins, the fruit goes in one line from start to finish, so it’s not so expansive or particularly deep but does have a nice style to it. Good acidity, concentration and freshness. Focused, driven, clean with precision. Classic, easy to drink and to recommend.

The 2020 Labégorce has turned out nicely, bursting with aromas of cherries, berries and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and ample palate. Fleshy and layered, this contemporary-styled Margaux will drink well young. (WK)
