Description

Château Certan de May traces its origins back to the historic Domaine de Certan, founded at the end of the 16th century by a Scottish family. Following the 19th-century divisions of the estate, the property established its own identity and today, under the stewardship of the Barreau-Badar family, upholds a classic Pomerol style defined by balance, depth and longevity.

The 5.5-hectare vineyard, laid out in a single block — an uncommon feature in Pomerol — is located on the southeastern part of the plateau. The terroir consists of approximately 70% deep clay and 30% gravel, providing structural power and aromatic precision. The vines average close to 40 years of age, with older parcels that survived the severe frost of 1956.

The blend is dominated by Merlot (70%), complemented by Cabernet Franc (25%) and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), contributing structure and tension. The 2019 harvest took place between September 17 and October 4. Vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with malolactic fermentation in barrel. Ageing lasts 12 to 14 months in French oak, with 60–80% new barrels depending on the vintage.

In 2019, the wine displays defined aromas of black cherry, cassis and loamy soil, integrated with creamy yet well-judged new oak. On the palate it is full-bodied, layered and precise, with firm concentration and fine-grained tannins. The texture evolves towards a more supple and enveloping feel with aeration, revealing layers of dark fruit, earthy nuances and a long, penetrating finish.

Damaged or Incorrect Products: If you receive a damaged product or one different from the item ordered, you must notify us within 24 hours of receipt, attaching photographs of the packaging and the affected product. UNCORK THE EXTRAORDINARY

Tar and dried tobacco with black cherries and blackberries. Stones, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a flavorful finish. Really tightly wound. Try after 2026.

An under the radar insiders' Pomerol that is subdued but clearly holding a lot back. Give it time and you find layers of earthy, focused and finessed blackcurrant and bilberry fruits. Balanced, well placed, gets increasingly creamy and succulent as it opens in the mouth, showing its complexity and promise. Harvest September 17 to October 4.

The 2019 Certan de May has turned out very well, offering up aromas of rich cherries, cassis, loamy soil and creamy but nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, layered and lively, with fine concentration, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish, this is beautifully balanced Pomerol that no doubt benefits from the perspective of consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet.
