Fèlsina

Territory, knowledge and vision: A benchmark winery in Tuscany.

Founded in 1966, Fèlsina emerged at a turning point for Italian wine, when Domenico Poggiali Fèlsina acquired the estate with a clear vision: to restore the value of Tuscan viticulture through quality-driven production and technical expertise. From the outset, the project combined entrepreneurial discipline with deep respect for local tradition.

The winery’s evolution accelerated in the 1970s with the arrival of Giuseppe Mazzocolin, whose cultural background and international outlook played a decisive role in shaping Fèlsina’s commercial identity. A defining moment came in the early 1980s through the collaboration with renowned oenologist Franco Bernabei and the intellectual influence of Luigi Veronelli. The 1983 vintage marked the debut of Fontalloro and Rancia, establishing a stylistic benchmark that continues to define Fèlsina today.

Now led by Giovanni Poggiali alongside his father Giuseppe, Fèlsina represents a rare model of continuity, research and long-term commitment, deeply rooted in the agricultural heritage of Tuscany.

The Vineyards

Fèlsina is located on the southeastern edge of the Chianti Classico appellation, where the rolling Chianti hills gradually give way to the landscapes of the Crete Senesi, in the direction of Montalcino. The estate covers approximately 600 hectares, with around 95 hectares planted to vines.

This frontier position results in remarkable geological diversity. Vineyards are planted on predominantly calcareous, rocky soils, featuring laminated marl, sandstone, clay, silt and mineral-rich marine sediments. Combined with varied exposures, elevations and microclimates, these conditions allow Sangiovese to express a wide spectrum of nuances while retaining strong territorial identity.

Viticulture at Fèlsina is guided by sustainability, soil preservation and biodiversity. The estate operates as a complex agricultural ecosystem, integrating woodland, olive groves, cereals and natural vegetation to maintain environmental balance. Since the early 1980s, Fèlsina has carried out one of Italy’s most extensive mass selection programmes for Sangiovese, preserving a diverse genetic heritage of clones and rootstocks that remains central to the estate’s future.

Winemaking Philosophy

Fèlsina’s winemaking philosophy is built on precision, restraint and consistency. The aim is to translate fully ripe, healthy grapes into wines that clearly reflect their vineyard origin and the character of Sangiovese.

Fermentations are carefully monitored, combining traditional practices with modern cellar technology.

Ageing takes place in the historic underground cellars carved into tufa rock, using a measured approach to oak. Both new and seasoned barrels are employed, with ageing periods adapted to each cuvée. The resulting wines are structured, age-worthy and expressive, defined by balance, purity of fruit and a strong sense of place.
