The Dönnhoff estate is deeply rooted in Oberhausen an der Nahe, where the family has cultivated vineyards for more than 250 years. Historical records trace the Dönnhoff name in the region back to the 18th century, reflecting a long-standing and enduring bond with the Nahe Valley.
The modern identity of the estate began with Hermann Dönnhoff (1880–1953), who recognized the extraordinary potential of Riesling in the region’s finest vineyards. His early decision to bottle wines from individual sites anticipated a terroir-driven philosophy focused on origin. His son, Hermann Dönnhoff Jr. (1916–1991), further strengthened the foundations of the estate by developing key vineyards such as Oberhäuser Brücke and building the press house and the first winery facilities.
The decisive step onto the international stage came with Helmut Dönnhoff, who took charge of both vineyard and cellar in 1971 after completing formal training in viticulture. His work established a distinctive style defined by precision, balance, and a clear expression of site, positioning Dönnhoff among the leading producers of German Riesling.
Today, the fourth generation, represented by Cornelius Dönnhoff, continues this legacy. After gaining international experience, he returned to the family estate in 2007 and now oversees all aspects of the project. Despite its global reputation, Dönnhoff remains, above all, a family-run winery.
The Vineyards
Dönnhoff’s vineyards stretch across the heart of the Nahe Valley, from Niederhausen to Schloßböckelheim—an area defined by steep slopes, dramatic landscapes, and a remarkable diversity of soils and microclimates. These conditions are particularly well suited to the cultivation of Riesling.
The estate farms nine vineyards classified as Große Lage, regarded among the finest sites in the Nahe. These exceptional vineyards form the backbone of the estate and allow the wines to express their origin with great precision.
Across generations, the family has remained firmly committed to the preservation and careful stewardship of its vineyards, prioritizing responsible, long-term vineyard management. This philosophy underpins Dönnhoff’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the region.
Winemaking Philosophy
Dönnhoff works from a clear conviction: great wines are born in exceptional vineyards. Accordingly, the cellar work is designed to respect and preserve the identity of each individual site.
Winemaking follows a precise and low-intervention approach, with decisions tailored to the specific character of each vineyard and vintage. The goal is to highlight varietal purity, freshness, and the wines’ natural balance.
Rather than imposing a uniform house style, Dönnhoff seeks to translate the character of each vineyard into the bottle. The result is a range of elegant, structured Rieslings with remarkable ageing potential, offering a faithful expression of the diversity of the Nahe Valley.
