César Márquez

One of the essential names in the new Bierzo

César Márquez, nephew of renowned winemaker Raúl Pérez, has evolved from one of Bierzo’s most promising young talents into one of its most respected producers.

After training at the family winery, Castro Ventosa, and working with the Michelini brothers in Gualtallary, Mendoza, he launched his own project in 2015 in Valtuille de Abajo, restoring a 19th-century cellar.

The Vineyards

César Marquez currently farms around 7 hectares spread across the appellation, mostly old-vine Mencía and Godello planted in distinctive sites.

Nearly all vineyards are bush-trained and rooted in a variety of soils and exposures. Among his most notable parcels are Sufreiral, one of the few vineyards in Bierzo with calcareous soils, and Pico Ferreira, a cool northwest-facing slope characterized by slate soils.

His viticulture is respectful and focused on maintaining the vineyard’s natural balance while highlighting the identity of each site.

Winemaking Philosophy

All his wines share a common thread: freshness, precision, moderate alcohol levels, and a thoughtful use of stems to enhance structure and complexity.

Many fermentations take place in open barrels, allowing gentle extraction and a clean aromatic profile. Post-fermentation macerations are long, adding depth and expressiveness.

The wines are aged in old barrels to avoid a dominant oak influence and preserve the fruit’s character.

Since his earliest vintages, César Márquez’s work has been praised for authentically reflecting the personality of each vineyard and for his tireless pursuit of new expressions within Bierzo.
