Jacopo Biondi Santi - Castello di Montepò
The evolution of a legendary legacy in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma
Castello di Montepò is the personal project of Jacopo Biondi Santi, heir to one of the most influential families in the history of Italian wine. His great-grandfather, Ferruccio Biondi Santi, revolutionized winemaking at the end of the 19th century by creating the legendary Brunello di Montalcino, using a unique clone of Sangiovese known as Sangiovese Grosso.
In the mid-1990s, Jacopo decided to follow his own path by founding Castello di Montepò, an estate located in the Tuscan Maremma, in Scansano, where tradition meets innovation. The winery is housed in a 12th-century medieval fortress, surrounded by hills, forests, and vineyards planted on schist soils—a privileged environment where history, nature, and viticultural culture converge.
With a modern and bold vision, Jacopo—together with his children Tancredi, Clemente, and Clio—continues a family story that has shaped Italian wine for over 150 years, reinterpreting the legacy with wines that are elegant, distinctive, and contemporary in style.
The Vineyards
Castello di Montepò spans 55 hectares of certified vineyards, cultivated with historical clones of Sangiovese Grosso (BBS 11), an exclusive heritage of the Biondi Santi family. The vineyards are planted on well-drained schist and clay soils, with excellent sun exposure and a dry, ventilated climate, ideal for slow and balanced grape ripening.
The estate sits at the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, a region that combines sea and hills, with unique biodiversity and a strong agricultural identity. Its landscape of forests, hills, and natural reserves reflects the harmony between man and nature that defines Montepò’s approach.
Viticulture follows sustainable, low-impact practices, respecting natural cycles and preserving the authenticity of the terroir. In addition to Sangiovese Grosso, selected international varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot—are also cultivated, adding complexity and dimension to the wine portfolio.
Winemaking Philosophy
At Castello di Montepò, winemaking blends technical precision with artisanal sensitivity. Wines ferment under controlled temperatures to preserve purity and typicity and are aged in French oak barrels, replacing the traditional Slavonian oak casks used in Montalcino. This approach results in a modern, polished, and approachable style, without sacrificing the structure and depth characteristic of Sangiovese Grosso.
The wines express aromatic intensity, silky texture, and balance, such as the flagship Sassoalloro, a single-varietal Sangiovese Grosso that embodies the contemporary interpretation of the Biondi Santi legacy.
Each label reflects the family’s pioneering spirit: a blend of tradition and innovation, honoring the past while looking to the future, where respect for the land and pursuit of excellence remain the foundation of the winery’s identity.
